Su ubicación estratégica y su función comercial la convirtieron en un nodo fundamental de intercambio y abastecimiento durante buena parte del siglo XX, formando parte del tejido urbano ligado al trabajo del mar y a la economía local. Con el paso del tiempo, el edificio dejó de cumplir su función original y fue reconvertido en un espacio de uso cultural, integrado en el entorno de la pasarela de La Grapa y en diálogo directo con el Centro Cultural Niemeyer.
