The first edition will be held in Avilés from May to September 2026
Avilés will host the first edition of the Climate Biennial from May to September 2026. With the support of local organisations, the activities will also be extended to other areas of Asturias.
The Biennial is run by a local working group and a collegiate curatorship
In collaboration with the City Council of Avilés and other city and regional stakeholders, the Biennial is promoting the creation of a Design Group to address complex issues such as the multiple transitions that Avilés and Asturias are experiencing. In addition, the Biennial will have a collegiate curatorship that will take care of each of its lines of work.

Lines of work conceived as a hybrid device
- Exhibition and new creation
Encouraging the creation of collective imaginaries and new production. Through the exhibition format, the Biennial is displayed in emblematic places of the territory and recovers many others linked to its history and industrial heritage.
- Public space
Bringing together a series of experts and collectives who, through artist-led working groups, experiment and test new relational models with different territories that are deployed in artistic installations in public spaces and facilities.
- Artistic mediation
Stirring up collectivisation through artistic projects with the mediation of local organisations that takes the form decided by local communities, mediating organisations and artists (workshops, performances, collective vegetable gardens, popular festivals…).
- Education alliance
Building a coalition of schools to implement climate-related content in school curricula and teacher training.
- Public and media programme
Drawing on projects from the previous lines of work to propose activities such as conferences, workshops or concerts, and to infiltrate media and entertainment ( press, podcasts and radio or film platforms) with new artistic formats.
- Special Projects
Applying a global governance perspective to the previous lines of work. The Biennial proposes to reformulate the traditional idea of the ‘pavilion’ from a translocal perspective and from non-exhibition formats (working groups, film cycles, artist residencies on trains…).
