INFO

The La Luz Library, also known as the Xungarosa Library, is one of the most emblematic cultural facilities within Avilés’ municipal library network. Located in the heart of the La Luz neighbourhood, it was established with the aim of bringing reading, knowledge and culture closer to a community that experienced significant population growth during the city’s industrial expansion.

The library opened in 1978 and became the fifth public library in Asturias. From the outset, it included separate spaces for adults and children, establishing itself as a meeting place for generations of local residents. Today, it offers reading areas, access to periodicals, internet facilities and a cultural programme designed to promote reading and encourage community participation.

The library’s history is closely linked to the development of the La Luz neighbourhood, an urban planning project launched in the 1950s and 1960s to accommodate Avilés’ rapid growth following the arrival of thousands of workers employed in the steel industry. Over the years, the library established itself as one of the neighbourhood’s principal cultural spaces, contributing to education, social integration and democratic access to culture.

Today, it forms part of the Municipal Library Network of Avilés and plays a key role in the city’s cultural life through reading promotion initiatives, literary events, workshops and activities designed for audiences of all ages.
