Sara García (Gijón, 1983) uses the act of sharing food as a starting point to reflect on hospitality, care and the ways in which different species relate to one another. In moulding mourning mouths (2025), the artist uses bread as the focal point of a research on planetary grief in the face of the irreversible loss of biodiversity. Bread appears here not only as food, but also as a historical and ceremonial record: it bears witness to the changes in our relationship with the territory, from the earliest rituals involving wild wheat to contemporary agricultural industrialisation.

The installation brings together video, masks, costumes and figures made from bread, alongside a performance staged during the opening of the Climate Biennial. Drawing on references from across different cultures —from Egyptian funeral rituals to Asturian mourning breads— García creates farewell ceremonies for microorganisms, insects, fungi and other forms of life that quietly disappear. In her work, mourning becomes a collective, multi-species practice: a way of coming to terms with loss whilst, at the same time, imagining new forms of care and regeneration.
